Earth Week has officially begun! Our fifth week is going to be full of wonderful activities to teach the kids how to love and care for the Earth.

We began today with a craft: fuzzy caterpillar pots! Reusing the egg cartons kindly donated to our program, we cut them into section of three. Everyone got to personalize their own caterpillar with colors, pipe cleaner antennae, and googly eyes. Later we filled the caterpillars with dirt and grass seeds. With a little water and sunshine, you’ll have your own fuzzy caterpillar in no time!

After our craft we went to the park to do some Recycling 101. We talked about “The 3 R’s” : reduce, reuse, recycle. We looked at different recycling symbols and what can be recycled in Brooklyn. The kids new quite a lot about recycling but we also taught them a few things saving energy and reusable fuels.

To test their new found knowledge, we then had a recycling relay race. The kids did different movements as they collected the garbage and recyclables we scattered on the course. When they got to the end, they had to sort their collection into recycling and non-recycling piles before they could scatter the items for the next runner. The kids picked up a lot during our lesson!

After the relay, the kids had free time before we had snack. For snack, we were lucky enough to have birthday cupcakes as well as fresh peaches and watermelons in honor of our camper Sabian! We sang “Happy Birthday” and cooled off as we enjoyed the treat.

Tomorrow we’ll be talking about the Wisconsin environment.

Reminder!! Our field trip to the Aldo Leopold Nature Center is this Wednesday! All campers are to wear their Brooklyn Summer Rec. tee shirts on that day. We are still hoping to get a few chaperones as well; let us know if you can commit to the trip by tomorrow or Wednesday at the beginning of the session.
