Bonsoir, Brooklyn! Today we moved over to Europe to check out what’s happening in France. We are lucky enough that our very own coordinator, Lauren, is studying the french language in grad school… plenty of French connections today! The wonderful Sandrine chatted with our kids about life in France. Did you know that France could fit into the US 17 times? Or that the national animal of France is the rooster?

After the presentation we made our way to Smithfield Park to play a game or two and do some crafts. We played “J’accuse!” which is a french take on the game “Frogger.” One person is randomly chosen to be the murderer. We walked about, saying “bonjour” and shaking hands; the murderer would stick their tongue out at the person they shook hands with. That person then had to count to 10 and then die a dramatic french death. Everyone else played detective and tried to figure out who was the killer. When they thought they knew, they would point and yell “j’accuse!” which means “I accuse you!” in french. If they were right, the murderer was caught and we started over. If they were wrong, they joined the other french casualties on the lawn.

After “J’accuse!” we tried our hand at impressionist painting. The kids tested their knowledge of the art form by naming artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet. Then we created our own impressionist masterpieces using watercolors. There were dogs, sheep, tacos and chickens painted… not too shabby!

Before we knew it, time was up! We headed back to the community building with paintings in hand and a few french words to try at home. Tomorrow we will talk about Kenya to finish off “Around the World” week. Let’s finish strong! Bonsoir and adieu!
